April's Riverton Community Market

Despite the cold, rainy weather, we managed to pull off a vibrant but cozy market - full of good cheer (-and happy for a window of no rain whilst the stall-holders brought in their goods to set up)! Riverton was buzzing with souls on holiday for the long weekend so it was nice to see lots of new faces browsing the stalls and catching up with the locals.

Even though at times the rain was coming down HARD, we managed to do a load of apple pressing (thank goodness for the gazebo!!), aided by a couple of wonderful WWOOFers (Willing Workers On Organic Farms) Annysa and Rhett, who happened to be staying with our family. I love the process of running the hydraulic apple press! First we put apples through the muncher (borrowed from Plant South - thanks guys - you're awesome!!) and then, the mashed up apples are put into the sides of the cylindrical hydraulic press (borrowed from Chris of Wyndham- thanks Chris... apple juice coming your way!), at which point, the juice is already pouring out of them (as the muncher munches very efficiently!). From there the water to the press is turned on and a rubber bladder running down the inside of the press starts filling with water, squeezing the apple pulp into the sides of the press - at this point the amber liquid is gushing out into the channel of the press and down into the bucket.. it produces about 7 litres per load. Everyone watching got to sample the delicious nectar. It tastes quite different to shop bought apple juice and even different from the juice produced from home juicers. My hope is that this demo (showing how quick and easy it is to press a load of apples with this equipment) will inspire people to bring their apples to next years harvest-time markets (March and April 2027) or even to start planting apple trees this winter.

Our beautiful raffle basket this month was won by stallholder Kate from Nightcaps (Vivura -Creative Boutique). Congrats Kate and thanks for being a part of our market! And thanks to all the stall-holders that donate items for the raffle and to those that buy the raffle tickets!

The baking competition was won by Jasmin with her divine Apple Pie - the pastry and the filling were just amazing. I only remembered to take a picture when it was almost all gone. My entry was, as ever, not what it was meant to be. It was more of a raw apple slice which was nice in its own right but was certainly not an apple pie!! (Note to self... follow the brief next time!! 😂🤣). Jasmin has kindly donated her prize back into the market.

Our next market is going to be on the same day as an event called Riverton Retro Revival so we will think of a retro baking competition to coincide with this theme. To be announced soon on our Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/rivertoncommunitymarket
PLEASE NOTE: There are some more details about this event at the bottom of this post and contact details for the organizer if you are interested in being a part of it!
Meanwhile - have an awesome month, stay warm and we'll see you at the next market on Sunday 31st May! 😍
