The October Riverton Community Market was a really special one with many feel-good moments. In fact, the only feed-bad moment came as I blew up our mixer by plugging in the wrong power lead – it seems that you cannot mix and match power leads, even when the adapters fit the right hole – lesson learnt! We could still use the old Fender speaker though and the musicians produced some beautiful sounds though it!
We had some great entries for our Banana Cake competition – thanks to those who entered and to the judges! We love embracing the spirit of sharing at this market and the baking competition is such a fun, and delicious, way to do this! I only just realised last night (as I was eating a piece of another cake that I baked at the same time), that my entry was in fact a banana loaf and not a cake ... (it didn’t say that on the recipe!) so it wasn’t like the other cakes – haha, baking just isn’t my forte - I’ll keep on trying though! The winners were Luna & Amanda Anderson (number 5 for those who were the judges) – an amazing cake with an awesome texture and flavour, deliciously iced with cream cheese frosting and blueberries!! Yum.
I managed to find some small items to post to my friends/family abroad - polymer clay earrings (from Sarahs Creationz) so mission achieved in that respect! I also came away with an assortment of other goodies including another beautiful rock painted by Rose, some (really delicious) chocolate truffles from Harlan, an Echium plant from Liam, some cards from Bronwyn (Affordable Cards) and a gorgeous Rimu chopping board from Mike (Holt Cottage). And finally another of Giselle’s lamp shades (Revamped Lamps) for an existing lamp stand that I already had (- so technically, not buying another lamp is what I said to my husband as I tried to sneak it into the house!). Pretty stoked with that haul!
I’m so happy that the raffle was won by Mia who was selling gorgeous cupcakes with her sister (as a fundraiser for their squash trips) – she was super stoked by all the bounty within the basket! By the way, the odds of winning the prize when I’m sidetracked with talking to market goers and stall holders rather than concentrating on selling the raffle tickets are very good... just saying!! The money we make on the raffle pays for the $75 prize for the baking competition and then, if there’s any extra, it goes towards items for the market. We have already been able to buy the beautiful gazebo we are now using - which is essential to baffle the sound in the hall: otherwise it’s like an echoey swimming pool with sound bouncing off all the surfaces, making it nearly impossible to have a conversation with the person standing right next to you. Next purchase may be a gazebo for the outside space which we are hoping to utilize during the warmer months!
Our next market falls on Sunday the 24th November. If you would like a stall at this market, please let me know (020 414 09990). If you would like to play music at our market, you are very welcome to either bring your own instrument or use my guitar. Meanwhile, have a wonderful month and enjoy the sunshine which, surely, is going to make a decent and sustained appearance soon.
