August's Riverton Community Market
Another lovely Riverton Community Market! Despite the sideways rain and gale force winds, I was really impressed that we still pulled off an epic market. Kudos to those that braved the cold, wintery weather to come and hang out with us for a bit and big love to all the stall-holders who make the markets what they are - I feel super blessed to be a part of such a beautiful community!
My day started with a massage from Sam of Aroha Massage . I HIGHLY recommend indulging in one of her 20 minute chair massages - she is very skilled at finding the stuck spots in my back and frankly, what a great way to start a Sunday! In this picture she is administering one of my (many) favourite parts of her massage... the (gentle) thumping part!!
I love the winter markets as they have a relaxed, cruisy feeling and there is a bit more time to catch up with other stall-holders and market goers. This market, we had a couple of girls from the high-school with their young enterprises stall - Snack Attack. They spent the previous day cooking up a storm and the cookies they didn't sell at the market they were planning to sell at the school this week - good plan and it was great to have you at the market! All kids and fundraisers welcome at our markets!!
We had some beautiful music - thanks heaps to Iri, Morgan and Liam for playing and entertaining us. We love you guys!
The baking competition of savoury scones had four entries and, although mine wasn't an epic fail (as far as my cooking fails go), it still wasn't great. Even though I followed the recipe, it seems that there was too much baking soda in it, which not only affected the taste negatively, it also turned the spelt flour a kind of mouldy looking black! Oh dear - I rightfully got zero votes.🤣😂 Mike of Holt Cottage came a very close second place with his divine savoury bacon scone, but first place went to local girl, Faye of Riverton with her cheese and chives scones. Well done Faye - they were really delicious and good on you for giving it a go! I missed getting a pic of the entries but took a photo of the gorgeous winning recipe instead...
So Mike may have missed out on the scones competition win but he ended up winning the raffle basket of love so he was pretty happy with that outcome! Well done Mike - you rock!! And by the way - I love the Spurtles that you made since the last market. For those not in the know, (as I wasn't before asking Mike), they look like a stick and have been historically used by Scottish folk for stirring porridge! The other super cool thing that he made (and unfortunately didn't photograph) was a herb stripping bowl - a bowl with little holes through which a stalky herb, like rosemary or thyme, can be pulled. Such a clever wee thing... I meant to buy one but got distracted. Next time!
Our next market falls on 27th September. The baking competition will be announced in due course - meanwhile have a lovely month, stay warm and we'll see you next time!
