It may have been a rainy old winter's day in Southland but we brought a bit of life and fun into our day at the market on Sunday. Two new stall-holders were welcomed, one (Bea's Bakehouse) bringing a veritable feast of home-baked goods to sell and the other (Kakapo Creations), a plethora of delicious smelling soaps. As usual, everyone had a great time catching up with friends and chatting with stall-holders ... lovely way to spend a Sunday!

Soooo, the baking competition this time was Louise Slice, something I'd never eaten and certainly never cooked. Jasmin and I had a good old chuckle at how I hadn't followed the recipe properly (again) - well, it seemed like WAY too much sugar in the topping so I halved it, which meant the topping wasn't as fluffy as it should have been. I also managed to weld my entry to the dish that I'd baked it in, although in my defence, the recipe didn't say anything about baking paper. It probably also didn't help that I realised, half an hour after removing the dish from the oven, that I probably hadn't cooked it for long enough, so I put it back in for another 15 minutes. (The top was looking brown so I'd taken it out but on cutting it, the base felt somewhat doughy... I was determined to not enter another competition where my entry had to be withdrawn because the dough wasn't properly cooked!!) One of these days, my baking is going to surprise me (and everyone else)!

Anyway - we had 5 entries for this baking competition and lots of willing taste testers. The winner, with her gluten-free recipe (from Simon & Alison Holst's Gluten Free Baking book), was Jacqui of Riverton! She was stoked to win - congratulations Jacqui! Thanks to everyone for making the effort for these fun baking competitions and for sharing your delicious baking with our community!
The winner of the raffle was George, one of our stall-holders (Feet Treats)! I love it how the stall-holders often win the raffles... I guess what goes around, comes around as they all donate something into the raffle basket each month (as well as buying lots of raffle tickets!).

Our next market falls on the very last day of August - the 31st. We're planning to do another Sausage Roll baking competition for this one. It was one of our most popular baking competitions last year, with people waiting like a pack of hungry wolves to pounce on those delicious warms mosels the second taste testing began just after midday. Curious to see whether the smell of warm sausage rolls about to be served up (for free) at lunchtime does the same thing at this next market - haha! Come and see for yourselves.
