    June's Riverton Community Market

    A Little Bit of Everything
    A Little Bit of Everything

What a beautiful, cruisy market – full of vibrant colours and things being sold that I’d love to fill my house with (I’m making steady progress with this!) all to the soundtrack of animated conversations of our wonderful community – truly a lovely way to spend a Sunday!  We had three new stall-holders this time; Tiki Ni Moana a Pacifika-based company which is designed to promote Pacifika culture in the Southland region; Hewitt Wood & Metalcraft with a gorgeous and unique array of home and garden items made from (- you guessed it) wood and metal, and; True In Nature, who offer outdoor learning experiences for children and families – they were over-seeing whittling for anyone that wanted a go and available to have conversations about the nature groups that they run.  It was lovely having you guys there and super cool that Krishi of Tiki Ni Moana was winner of the raffle this time!

The Chocolate Cake baking competition was a popular one with seven entries, a couple slipping in at the very last minute, one of which was still warm from the oven and dripping with chocolaty goodness!  Funny, it’s actually quite hard to sample seven chocolate cakes in order to vote for the favourite, but people heroically did their duty and a winner was announced... Number 2 which was Nina with her chocolate orange cake!  This cake is a testimony to perseverance as it seems there were a few stumbling blocks on the way for this cake ...  it cracked on exit from the oven and had to be reshaped (yep, I’ve been there!) and the ganeche had to be made twice as it didn’t work out the first time.  Well done Nina for your dedicated persistence (- it paid off!) and thanks to everyone else for your delicious entries!

July’s market will fall on Sunday the 27th July. The Baking Competition will be Louise Slice, in celebration of Louise (- winner of prior competitions and a bit of a master chef!) being back in the area. This is another recipe I have never tried but I’ll give it a crack.  Look forward to seeing you at the next market!
