    The May Riverton Community Market

    Writer: Tamsin ScottTamsin Scott

Well, what can I say – the Riverton Community Market just seems to get better each time! We aim to provide a warm, inviting and vibrant environment for local people to sell their wares and for people venturing in the doors to check the market out and I think we have achieved that!  It may have been crappy weather (there really was a gale blowing on Saturday!) but these markets really offer a wonderful opportunity to have a good old catch up with others in our community – looking around there were so many smiles and good conversations being had!  Having live music from our extremely talented local musicians really adds to the feel of this event... so a HUGE shout out to all the musicians who have played at our markets so far! See some pictures below of these talented beings (sorry Andy - didn't manage to get you on the banjo - our photographer left before you started!) If you’d like to sign up for a slot at a future market, please contact me.

With regards to the items on sale – I am blown away by the standard of crafts as well as the affordability.  I came away with some delicious sourdough bread, a couple of beautiful handcrafted books (which I intend to make photo albums from), a sturdy bird feeder (complete with seed cakes) made from recycled bits and pieces, a velvety ‘teething’ doll for a friend’s baby and some of Hannah’s HOT sauce.  There really are a great selection of gifts, so come to the next market with that in mind if you have birthdays coming up – something handmade is always more meaningful!

And then there was the baking competition!!  Sausage rolls were on the menu for all the willing tasters / judges and it was quite an experience trying to cut the sausage rolls fast enough to keep up with demand!  But oh my – there were some really delicious ones!  There were two winners, receiving equal numbers of votes: Jasmin of Orepuki (who was number 1 on the table) and Aleysa from Riverton (who was number 2).  Each won $75!  Jasmin has put her prize money back into the competition so that next month’s competition once again has a prize of $150 - wooohooo!!  We will announce what the competition will be next week (as we haven’t yet quite decided)!

We are holding raffles each month to raise money for the baking competition prizes, with any excess money going towards improving the markets (next on the list is replacing the gazebo, which is on its last legs!).  The stall holders all kindly donate an item (or two) for the basket and this one had a beautifully diverse range including; honey, earrings, HOT sauce, fruit leather, nutty fruit bars, possum skin insoles, bath bombs, lavender sachets, handcrafted cards and pens, sourdough bread, a handmade doll and home grown chillies. The winner was Crystal from Orepuki!  And here’s a cool thing - our lovely photographer (visiting stunt man Richard who is visiting family in Riverton) took a shot of her buying the winning ticket!  So that was obviously meant to be!

Looking forward to seeing you at the next Riverton Community Market on Saturday 29th June - put it in your calendar/diary right now so you remember!  If you are a community group wishing to fund raise, please feel free to take advantage of this event.  If you would like a stall, please contact me, Tamsin, on 020 414 09990.
